In the 2010s, Monmouth University moved up the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges Ranking among regional institutions in the Northern United States, going from 76 in 2005 to 37 in 2012 and 30 in 2013. By 2018, Monmouth has climbed all the way to number 28 in the list of northern regional universities published by U.S. News & World Report. After The College of New Jersey, Monmouth is currently the second-highest regional college overall and the state’s highest-ranked private regional university.

While advancing in the U.S. News & World Report rankings, Monmouth University did not feature on Forbes Magazine’s list of America’s Best Colleges until 2021. According to Mark Blackmon, director of press and public affairs at Monmouth University, the university was excluded from the Forbes list in 2016 because the magazine punished universities for awarding grants and scholarships and relied on “some information that can be quite subjective.”

“Even though Monmouth didn’t make the Forbes list, I feel that it doesn’t represent the level of its staff or the sort of institution that Monmouth is,” said Blackmon in response to charges that Forbes had downgraded a school’s rating as a result of its offering of financial assistance. We are really happy to be able to support the education of so many young people. It should have succeeded, in my opinion, without a doubt. In 2021, Monmouth University made its first appearance in the rankings, placing 394th.
