About Lincoln University

Lincoln University (LU), a historically black college or university (HBCU) connected to the state, is located close to Oxford, Pennsylvania. As the exclusive Ashmun Institute, it was the first HBCU in America to award degrees when it was founded in 1854. It has been a public institution since 1972.
Its main campus is located on 422 acres in Oxford, Pennsylvania, which is in southern Chester County. The institution maintains a second location in University City, a district of Philadelphia. At Lincoln University, there are about 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in various programs. It is a member institution of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

Despite the fact that the majority of its students are African Americans, the university has a long tradition of welcoming students of all races and countries. Women have been granted degrees since 1953; in 2019, there were 66% female undergraduate students.

Ashmun Institute, now known as Lincoln University, was founded in Hinsonville, Pennsylvania, by Quaker Sarah Emlen Cresson and Presbyterian minister John Miller Dickey.
They named it after the religious and social reformer Jehudi Ashmun. They established the institution to provide education for African Americans, who had few opportunities for higher education.
