100 vehicles pile up in Michigan crash as snowstorm moves across the country

On Monday, over 100 vehicles crashed or went off the interstate at Michigan as snow caused by the Great Lakes covered the state.
The huge traffic jam also led to the Michigan State Police shutting down both sides of Interstate 196 Monday morning just southwest of Grand Rapids even as officials tried to clear all the vehicles and more than 30 semitrailer trucks. The State Police reported that there were many injuries and no deaths had been reported.
It is not the first effect of the huge winter storm that is sweeping the country. The National Weather Service warned of either very cold weather or winter storms possible in a number of states beginning in northern Minnesota and going south and east to Wisconsin, Indiana, and Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.
Snow had fallen as far south as the Florida Panhandle a day earlier, and to players of football, it has rendered it more difficult to hold on to the ball during playoff games in Massachusetts and Chicago. On Monday, the forecasters advised that there may be freezing temperatures overnight to Tuesday in most of north-central Florida and southeast Georgia.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff office in Michigan, several crashes, jack-knifed semis were reported as well as countless cars that went off the road. Stuck drivers were being transported to Hudsonville High School where they could call in to get assistance or secure a ride.
During the cleanup, the road was supposed to be closed several hours.
Grand Valley Towing is one of the firms that were assisting in clearing off the stuck vehicles, and over a dozen of its trucks arrived at the scene of the chain-reaction crash. Some of the towing firms came in the ruthlessly cold weather.
Manager Jeff Westveld said that they were attempting to get many vehicles out of there as soon as possible, to open up the road.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned to see what later turns out to be the case.
