27-year-old American Athlete, Gabby Thomas juggles playing with studying, earns 2 degrees at US universities
American-born Gabby Thomas was able to graduate from two American universities with two degrees while running, training and studying at the same time.
Gabrielle “Gabby” Thomas is a track and field athlete from the United States who has a Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology and Global Health from Harvard University, and a Master of Science in Public Health from the University of Texas.
Gabby expressed that she was shocked and grateful to have graduated from Harvard despite all she had achieved by the time she was set to graduate. She said that although she was initially skeptical, she appreciates both the relationships, experiences and opportunities she was given.
She thought back on moving on after high school with no clue what Harvard would bring her. “I will always have so much love for this place and an eternal gratitude with the people that made it home.” “I am going to miss it so much but I am very excited to see where my journey takes me next!” she said.
Gabby earned both degrees while working in her career as a student-athlete training for the Olympics 2024 in Paris and also working at a medical clinic for volunteers at Olympic.com.

It is more of a balancing act but that is the way I like it. And I like coming from track and something completely different to work on. “And when I’m doing my clinic work I can’t wait to get back to the track,” she said.
After her strict training sessions (Olympic) with her commitment to her track and field and medical care in which she can achieve her fulfillment. Gabby further added that she is given a new lease on life at the clinic.
“When I’m tired and wheezing at practice I’m just like, ‘I’m so grateful to be doing what I love and to be able to do it for a living.'” she said. Gabby said that she completed her Masters degree due to the passion that she has for public health.
Gabby told me that, to get ready for it, she relocated to Austin, Texas for her master’s degree. Her mom’s inspiring story of completing her Ph.D. while raising her family by herself is what she credits for her strength in life as an Olympic athlete.
“From being as a single parent without two pennies to rub together and working her way up to being where she is today, a successful professor living out her dreams and starting a non-profit to help people get an education,” she said.
She thinks that after her masters degree she will be so focused on getting to the Olympics that her mother’s wish for her to get her PhD would be fulfilled.
