Information about Incarnate Word University

The private, catholic University of the Incarnate Word’s major campuses are located in Texas’ San Antonio and Alamo Heights (UIW). The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word founded the university’s 154-acre main campus in 1881. It is the biggest Catholic university in Texas.

Eleven schools and colleges make up the institution, along with two campuses in Mexico, a European Study Center, a program that awards degrees to students in Latin America, Global Online, and a coed high school named St. Anthony Catholic High School.

The school was established by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word when they arrived in San Antonio in 1869 to help with the cholera outbreak’s treatment. Sisters Madeleine Chollet, Pierre Cinquin, and Agnes Buisson came at the bishop’s request. The sisters traveled from Galveston to San Antonio by stagecoach, but when they arrived, they discovered that their brand-new home had been completely destroyed by fire. The Ursuline Sisters gave the sisters shelter until they moved into their newly built mixed convent and hospital.

The nuns opened the Santa Rosa Infirmary, the city’s first hospital, on December 1. The sisters continued to help the ill as their neighborhood developed. When they were invited to begin working in child care, they created the first children’s homes in San Antonio, St. Joseph’s Orphanage for Girls and St. John’s Orphanage for Boys, in 1874.

As a consequence of their work in childcare, the sisters founded schools in Texas, Louisiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Mexico.

The company was founded in 1881 as the Incarnate Word School and was first organized as a women’s college. In 1900, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word moved the Academy of the Incarnate Word from its original location in San Antonio’s Government Hill district to their motherhouse in Alamo Heights. 1909 saw the addition of college courses to the curriculum and a name change to the College and Academy of the Incarnate Word.
